Genesis Choir

The Genesis choir was founded by Dr. Robert Porter, Pastor, and founder of the Genesis Missionary Baptist Church. Under his leadership along with the musical direction of Clarence Eggleton (Rev. James Cleveland, GMWA, Wanda Nero Butler, Eugene Cole & Persuaded, Sacramento Community Choir), Frank Fenner II, Bobby Adams, Lorraine Simmons and his sons, Tecoy and Ellington Porter, the Genesis Choir quickly garnered the reputation of being one of the most dynamic and anointed music ministries in Northern California.

Awards and accomplishments made by the Genesis choir include receiving the Best Church Choir of the year award in 1994 by Sacramento's Inspirational Music Awards, and a nomination for the Best Church Choir in Northern California by the Bay Area Gospel Music Awards (BAGMA) in 1996. In 1998, the Genesis Choir was awarded BAGMA Best Church Choir.

In 1995, Genesis made a successful entry into the national gospel music industry with the independent release of their first recording  “Be Ready He’s Coming Back” under Markee~Wes Productions, an independent label formed by Tecoy and Ellington Porter. This recording sold extremely well, with singles “All the Way” and “Be Ready” becoming radio hits. The success of this album led to many appearances on BET’s Bobby Jones Gospel Show and New Artist Showcase.

In 1998 the Genesis Choir released their sophomore recording “Genesitical” through a joint venture between Markee~Wes Productions and Noah’s Ark Music. Along with Dr. Robert Porter and the choir, “Genesitical” featured internationally acclaimed artists and writers DJ Rogers Sr. (Hezekiah Walker, Donald Lawrence, Doug Williams), James “Big Jimmy” Wright (BET’s The Monique Show, Sunday’s Best, Sounds of Blackness), and Tracy Carter (Wayman Tisdell, Lawrence Matthews, LA Mass, Mississippi Mass Children’s Choir). Genesisitcal received national attention through singles, “Lord Let Your Spirit Fall Fresh On Me”, “Renew Me”, and “Save Me Tonight”.

In 1999, the Genesis Choir showcased to the Gospel Announcer’s Guild at the 32nd Annual Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) in New Orleans, LA and received national press coverage in industry trade publications Gospel International (8/99) and Billboard (8/28/99). Unfortunately, it was also during this same year that Dr. Robert Porter transitioned into heaven, leaving the church and music ministry under the leadership of his sons, Revs. Tecoy and Ellington Porter.

With a determined spirit Pastors, Tecoy and Ellington Porter aka The Porter Brothers continued the musical legacy by recording and releasing the Genesis Youth Explosion Choir (GYEC) in 2001. Through a joint venture between Markee~ Wes Productions and God’s Gospel Sounds, GYEC reached national prominence with the single “Everytime”, written by Kevin and Joe Archie.

During the period of 2001-2003, the Porter Brothers spent much needed time focusing on the church, overseeing the construction of Dr. Robert Porter Family Life Center – a multi-million dollar, multi-purpose facility in honor of their late father. The center houses the church’s worship services, athletic leagues, and various outreach services for the community. From this effort, they were able to host the Edwin Hawkins and Walter Hawkins Music & Arts Love Fellowship Conference in 2008, where both the pre-musical and Conference recording was held. Through this conference, the Porter Brothers & Genesis Choir was able to minister with several prominent gospel recording artists including the legendary Edwin Hawkins, Bishop Walter Hawkins, Donald Lawrence, Richard Smallwood, Daryl Coley, and Melonie Daniels.

Because of their reputation for musical excellence and ministry authenticity, the Porter Brothers & Genesis continue to be sought out to work with national gospel artists including Bishop Hezekiah Walker, Donald Lawrence, and CeCe Winans (How Sweet The Sound, Oracle Arena, Oakland CA), Edwin Hawkins, the late Bishop Walter Hawkins, and Melonie Daniels (Music & Arts Love Fellowship Conference), Beverly Crawford (Genesis WOW Conference), and Minister Steve Lawrence (Genesis Music & Arts Workshop).

In 2010, The Porter Brothers & Genesis presented their CD release “Together”. Crafted together by a stellar production team led by the legendary D.J. Rogers (Say You Love Me) & the Porter Brothers, Tecoy and Ellington Porter; TOGETHER testifies of the VICTORY achieved when brothers, family, and church decide to stand in UNITY with GOD throughout the trials, challenges, and transitions that life brings! TOGETHER guarantees to musically thrill your senses as the message encourages your soul!
